The Dominican Republic (DR) is one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. It has experienced a remarkable period of robust economic growth over the past 25 years, where the annual GDP growth rate has averaged 6.1% between 2015 and 2019, fueled by tourism, remittances, foreign direct investment, mining revenues, free-trade zones, and telecommunications sectors. The capital of DR, Santo Domingo, is the center of economic production and hosts one-third of the nation’s population, making it the ideal hub for the design and implementation of public policies and private initiatives related to innovation and entrepreneurship.

MIT REAP Team Dominican Republic will establish a collaborative strategy for multi-sector action to support the implementation of the National Digital Strategy which seeks to strengthen all efforts needed to position the country in the digital economy. The team’s strategy will highlight the need for a more intentional effort in developing more technological capacities that can position the DR in the digital economy.
